Review: Be My Princess for Gree
I’m going to go ahead and post a review for Be My Princess for Gree, since I am currently playing it.
Be My Princess for Gree is Voltage’s newest release to the overseas market. It’s available through the Android Market or in the App Store for iPhone. It’s free to download, but you have to have a Gree account to play. Gree is also available for free. I’m playing on the iPhone.
I’m a big fan of Voltage’s other releases Pirates in Love and My Forged Wedding, however the format for this game is different from those.
Gameplay: To progress in the story, you use love passes. You get 5 free per day. This gets you through half a chapter. The prologue is 5 chapters and is a common route for all the characters (you interact with all the princes). Once you finish the common route, you choose a prince and start his story consisting of 15 chapters.
To progress in the story, you also have to have certain stats levels, like royal factors. If you don’t, you have to wait until you are at the level to proceed. To build these stats, you play mini games. Gacha is a slot machine-type game where you get a random item. It builds your stats, earns you cruz (in game currency), and earns you items for your room. Princess Party is basically you go to a party, and if it turns out well, you get a stats boost.
Art: The art is what I would expect from Voltage. It’s beautiful. However, the backgrounds are a bit blurry. I assume that has something to do with the Gree platform and needing an internet connection.
Story: It’s good so far. I’ve finished the prologue, and a chapter of a prince route.
Music: There isn’t any. The other Voltage releases had music, which I actually liked. They were well done and not so repetitive that it became grating. And it matched well with the current action in the story. I’m guessing again that the absence of music has to do with the Gree platform.
Final Thoughts: I dislike the love pass system. At this rate it will take me forever to play one route! You have the option to buy more passes, but $3.99 will only get you through half a chapter. That’s a bit much. So I’m taking the long way and using only the free passes you are allowed.
I could handle the love pass system, but the biggest problem I have is I cannot save the game. So I can’t load from a certain point and retry my response if I didn’t like the outcome. I can only keep playing, wondering if that previous choice cost me the good ending. I know that should be half the fun, but my OCD nature has a problem dealing with that!
In the other two Voltage games, you paid $3.99 for a character’s route, and then you could play it and save as many times as you wanted. Then you could replay it as many times as you wanted. It didn’t require an internet connect or other people. It was the story itself. I so prefer this format!!!
And to build your stats, you basically have to spam other players by adding them as princess mates and sending them greetings and inviting them to parties. I’m just here to play the story, no need to bother other folks.
Out of curiosity, I downloaded the Japanese version from the app store for free. It works on the same format as PiL and MFW. I played through the prologue. Even though I can’t read it, it’s obvious the story starts out differently. Am I missing out on the original story?! Oh and in the Japanese version, you can pursue one of the butlers, who just happens to be one of the hottest characters!
The one thing that I do actually like in the game is that it recommends which prince’s route to choose based on your answers in the prologue. That was kind of neat to see.
But of course I will keep playing, complaining all along the way.
At the moment, you can only choose between these three princes:
